WHAT IS SPEEDWAY ?

Speedway racing takes place on a flat oval track, usually of a dirt or loosely packed shale. The riders use this surface to slide their machines sideways into the bends using the rear wheel to scrub-off speed while still providing the drive to power the bike forward and around the bend.

Originating in New South Wales, Australia in the 1920's there are both now domestic and international competitions in a number of countries including the Speedway Grand Prix, the winner of which becomes World Champion for the current year

Regulations state that motorcycles used must have no brakes, run on Methanol, use only one gear and weigh a minimum 77KG. Racing consists of 4 riders competing over 4 laps on a track 260 to 450 metres long. This can be Individual or Team Events with 2 riders from each side involved in each heat.

The Sovereign League, which the Colts have joined, consists of 30 Teams in 3 Leagues of 10 with each Club racing each other twice Home and Away over the course of the Season. There are also 2 Cup competitions, the K.O.Cup which is open to all 30 clubs and the Divisional Cups which is between Clubs in each Division. Also there are a Best Pairs, 4 Team Tournaments and Individual meetings throughout the Season.
